Little Miss Merida

She definitely noticed us staring.

Eminem Look-a-Like...

This was the mark for our sketch club yesterday. It was hard NOT to notice this Eminem look-a-like as he strutted by our group. Unfortunately, he was so original, he became invisible -- all I could see were the clothes.

Man in white

Marcelo came up with the idea of finding an interesting subject, looking at him for a while, and then draw him from memory. This is my version:

Introducing Aran Darling

Aran Darling joined us for this, and gave us his Crusty Beach version of the mark.

With Problems Like Hers...

Ya ever notice that some people's problems are the envy of other people?

brave girl

Mo called her 'the girl from Brave' and it inspired me to try to match the style of the show.  I made her short dress into a long one and added the head band.

Lost Old Woman

Here is the sketch of the mark. She walked back and forth on the side walk. Gave me the impression that she was lost or indecisive of what to do. I focused on line quality of this one : )

sassy woman

Hope everyone is having a great labor day. I saw a tasty looking barbecue when i went on a run this morning... Here is a sketch inspired by the mark. I focused on varying the body shapes and emotions. I also played with some of the smaller details. : )

Mondrianna vs Vanilla

The ice cream was probably vanilla.

Harlequin meets Vixen

Fashion Queen

She was a fabulous 80's fashion queen.
"80's" in all senses.
This lady was beyond awesome.

Waiting...

This young woman was waiting for someone, and so she strolled by our area a couple times. She kept checking her phone, I guess she was getting texted.

Miss 70's Pants

Out of the great marks we saw, I chose to do Miss 70's Pants.

Top Knot

Fashionable and well hydrated!

Here are two designs for the mark from last Friday. On the right side one, I try to develop a story and contrast in shapes.

old man

It was a split decision between two marks. I only got a look at this old man and his dog.

raver girl

I did the unofficial mark. I liked that she had a lot of round shapes and was colorful. It's almost done.

Spring Flowers

To celebrate the end of spring and the start of summer, this woman was practically dressed as a summer flower. It was either that or a mesh bath puff!

Disguised?

It was almost like this guy was in disguise. Between the hat, beard and thick glasses, the only poking out of his face was his nose.

lumber jack man

I only got a quick glance at this guy. He reminded me of a lumber jack guy in shorts. hehe.

Soccer Player?

This soccer player had an unusual build. He was really thick in the chest, not at all what you might expect from someone that runs a lot. He was like a clydesdale of a man.

"It never-ever rains, in Southern California"

As the song goes, it never-ever rains in Southern California, it seems the only time we see umbrellas is when they are used as a parasol!

It's spring in California, but you'd never guess it with all the gray and black. What's up with that?

Little Man Backpack

Ok, this was the mark for last Friday, and while I drew the girl involved, it was the little man backpack that caught my attention.

Angry Soccer Guy

I think he was on the lookout for his next brawl.

The Soccer Hooligan!

I dunno why someone would want to cultivate this look, but that was the fashion statement. This rough and burly kid was not only wearing the look, he was owning it.

The Speed Sprinter...

The humor here was too rich and creamy to pass up.

We spotted this guy walking on the other side of the street. He was a study in contrast because he was wearing the latest Nike track speed suits, designer track footwear, ankle socks to reduce wind drag, and a cap to prevent the cool down -- the lastest in athletic track-wear.

Unfortunately, the only sprinting he was doing was to the local Starbucks for a venti frappucino.
Memory sketch from that amazing extra creamy sweet walking guy.

memory sketch
01.26.2014
I got a quick glace at this man. I added the oversize drink just for fun. When I added the cool shadows, it made the light side instant pop much warmer. nice. hehe

p.s.
I have two monitor, one has a warm tone and the other a cool tone. I don't know which monitor is more accurate. But this image looks better on the warmer monitor.

The Sketchclub Selective Process

It's funny, we select our marks by calling them out. This is not a dignified or scientific process at all, rather it is reduced to selective process akin to being in junior high. It could sound like this:

"Hey, what about the smurf at the crosswalk?"

"Hah! (*snicker*) A smurf."

"Nah, too easy."

"Well, how about Mike Tyson heading this way, or Ted Turner sitting at the tables?"

"Let's go with Tyson."

"OK, hee-hee, Tyson."

"Everybody in agreement, we're going with Tyson."

Followed by inconspicuous -- and not so inconspicuous -- stares in that direction.

South Bay Galleria 2013

As we bid adieu to 2013, we gathered for one last sketch romp. It was also the first time I had drawn in my sketchbook using my new spectacles. Alas, the time had finally come for glasses, but who knew my  sketchbook paper had so much texture! :p
