Angry Soccer Guy

I think he was on the lookout for his next brawl.

The Soccer Hooligan!

I dunno why someone would want to cultivate this look, but that was the fashion statement. This rough and burly kid was not only wearing the look, he was owning it.

The Speed Sprinter...

The humor here was too rich and creamy to pass up.

We spotted this guy walking on the other side of the street. He was a study in contrast because he was wearing the latest Nike track speed suits, designer track footwear, ankle socks to reduce wind drag, and a cap to prevent the cool down -- the lastest in athletic track-wear.

Unfortunately, the only sprinting he was doing was to the local Starbucks for a venti frappucino.
Memory sketch from that amazing extra creamy sweet walking guy.

I got a quick glace at this man. I added the oversize drink just for fun. When I added the cool shadows, it made the light side instant pop much warmer. nice. hehe

p.s.
I have two monitor, one has a warm tone and the other a cool tone. I don't know which monitor is more accurate. But this image looks better on the warmer monitor.

The Sketchclub Selective Process

It's funny, we select our marks by calling them out. This is not a dignified or scientific process at all, rather it is reduced to selective process akin to being in junior high. It could sound like this:

"Hey, what about the smurf at the crosswalk?"

"Hah! (*snicker*) A smurf."

"Nah, too easy."

"Well, how about Mike Tyson heading this way, or Ted Turner sitting at the tables?"

"Let's go with Tyson."

"OK, hee-hee, Tyson."

"Everybody in agreement, we're going with Tyson."

Followed by inconspicuous -- and not so inconspicuous -- stares in that direction.

South Bay Galleria 2013

As we bid adieu to 2013, we gathered for one last sketch romp. It was also the first time I had drawn in my sketchbook using my new spectacles. Alas, the time had finally come for glasses, but who knew my  sketchbook paper had so much texture! :p

Layers!

Mark from last week. I have never seen a bird wearing boots before.

Cool Guy

This guys was walking with attitude while smoking his cigarette. I posed him this way to enhance that cool guy look. hehe.

Yeah, Motocross Boots!

Oh, it was the attitude!

Sometimes we pick a mark based on the design of their clothing, the shape of their silhouette, or sometimes the coiffure of their hair. But, with this fellow, it was all in the walk!

That hair

I was mesmerized by the puff of hair.  Reminded me of a quote from the Simpsons.

Went by the name of Homer. Seven feet tall he was, with arms like tree trunks. His eyes were like steel, cold, hard. Had a shock of hair, red like the fires of Hell...

The latest mark.

When I saw this guy, I thought to myself, I've seen this look before. Then, it occurred to me, he looked like a strawberry version of Elvis Costello.

I was struggling with the pose. Took me a while but eventually got a decent one.

November 8 mark...

Here's the mark from waaay back in November. I didn't post it because no one else posted theirs. But, now that Todd posted his "drawing," I thought I would post mine.

Mark Nov 8th

Finally had time to finish the mark from November.

It was the tassels!

Sometimes something catches our eye, this time it was the tassels. (Sorry for the rough scan, I just snapped a picture from my sketchbook.)

In addition to the memory exercise, I practice my line quality. I think it could use a little more line width variation.

decora girl

Aside  from her unique outfit, I notice this lady was very lengthy and had round shapes.

Manga Reaches the US!

It's official, I saw my first Manga character in person. OK, I've seen plenty of characters at Comic Con, but not just walking around street? This isn't a costume, it's high-fashion! Complete with lollipop!

I believe the style is called Decora. It started when photographer Aoki Shoichi started to document the street fashion in Harujuku, Tokyo. And, now it seems to have reached the shores of Culver City.

I believe this is Decora's the first foray into these hallowed halls of Sketchclub.
